Updated: Mar 15, 2019
HELLO SEA MONSTER MUSIC FANS!! SM RADIO EPISODE #13 is here to bring you another taste of all the super talented songwriters and musicians we have in the NORTH WEST and more specifically, with direct ties to the home of funk/soul/jazz and just downright good music THE SEA MONSTER LOUNGE/seattle!!
you can check out the SEA MONSTER RADIO SHOW on these fine stations
I'm starting this episode off with one of my unreleased songs (ANDREW SEA MONSTER, owner of the SEA MONSTER LOUNGE) called "GIVE SOME BACK" that features me on lead vocals with a backing band of F2D (FUNKY 2 DEATH) members, Seattle keyboard genius who is now in the LATE SHOW band STEVE SCALFATI, and Seattle guitar master/gun for hire and educator ALEX MORTLAND.
Keeping it in the LATE SHOW family, a band called PET ROCKS from the mid 2000's featuring legendary Seattle guitarist/composer TIM YOUNG (guitarist on the LATE SHOW) and PAUL MATTHEW MOORE. sounds a bit like BECK's coolest stuff, a song called "5' till the BREAK OF DAY".
I know this is the 2nd episode in a row that I'm featuring THE LIQUE's music, but it's good and it's newly released so YOU'RE WELCOME! Keeping it wet, cold and wintry with a song called "VELVETEEN DREAM".
It's been a minute since they've been up here because they have a Vegas residency, but lead MC RASAR AMANI and crew will be back in Seattle with their original funky Hip Hop, don't sleep too hard!!
MIDNIGHT MAGIC is a New York based band with one funky Seattle trumpet player working as the musical bridge. CARTER YASUTAKE stops through the SEA MONSTER whenever he's in town to sit in with F2D or 700 FUNK. His band MIDNIGHT MAGIC's track "CALLING OUT" brings me to a heavy synth 80's hazy dance floor dreamland.
One of Seattle's longest running funk jam bands and former Thursday night SEA MONSTER resident band MARMALADE has their roots intermixed with another lesser known but super funky band NU SOL TRIBE. Featuring the great vocals of the ever stylish Mr VICTOR TREY FUNK LOVE! Check out their song "ELECTRIC".
SEA MONSTER LOUNGE Hall of Fame member JOE DORIA is a Seattle HAMMOND B3 legend. His Residency at the SEA MONSTER stretches back about 14 years and currently continues on TUESDAY NIGHTS! It was the catalyst behind the formation of the jazz/funk monster band MCTUFF. This song "CARL ROVE RESIGNS" features D'VONNE LEWIS on drums and ANDY COE on guitar.
LEIF TOTUSEK is an extremely talented Seattle guitarist who's claim to greatness is his abilities performing Haitian/Island/African/Gypsy music. Style, sorrow and joy pour from this mans fingers and I've witnessed it many times at the SEA MONSTER. This song makes me very happy, it's called "COMING HOME".
I recently had the pleasure of running sound for TYLER GAHN. He is a Seattle singer/songwriter who's voice is something special. His music is a joyful experience and his song "HAPPILY TOGETHER" showcases my insights! We hope to have he and his band back at the SEA MONSTER again soon!
This past FRIDAY night we hosted a new to the SEA MONSTER band's VIDEO RELEASE PARTY.. it was a huge success!! LEAH T & THE BAKED GOODS feature keyboardist/singer LEAH TOUSIGNANT's raw personality on display along with her soulful/pop songs that show much promise. This is the song from the video, "HIGH".
Another great female voice that I wish I heard more of was NICHOLE HALEEN. I know it was a ways back but she put out a record with her band THE PROJECTS and it was sexy/smoky and wonderful. I thought it was the start of something big, but bands break up and yada yada... her song SPIDERS WEB is highlighted here.
One of Seattle's finest jazz/funk bands is THE NEW TRIUMPH led by bassist composer CAMILO ESTRADA. What sets them apart from other jazz/funk groups is they feature only one horn, the trumpet of ROBBIE BEASLEY, and their style leans towards the Latin & Afro jazz a bit more than straight funk. This band also features star guitarist DANNY GODINEZ and percussion master RICARDO GUITY, as well as keys man MACK GROUT and drummer ADAM KESSLER. here is their song "PRETTY SH*T".
STINGSHARK is known throughout Seattle as a super cool dude who is always down to lend his funk/rock guitar magic to a jam. As the main guitarist for the funk band MARMALADE he has shown up and rocked houses for more than 10 years! Here he is with his original project STINGSHARK which just released this new material, including this soulful slow jam called "GREAT DIVIDE".
I'm a fan of great songs.. a great song is one that reaches YOU and makes you feel something. Play it over and over again and continue to feel that emotion. This is one of those songs.. it transports me to a space of sadness, a pit of despair out of which I'm not sure I even want to try climbing out of. It reminds me that I'm insignificant, and my whole life's work is a sandcastle swept into the sea and forgotten in a moment. My old time friend NOAH PARRIOT's song "ANY FORM".
I'm ending this episode with a joyful WEST COAST funk party rap song by MAC SLUG and ROCPHIZZLE which also features the talents of young sax lion MEDEARIS DIXON. JAMAL ROBINSON, aka ROCPHIZZLE is one of the superstars of the funk/soul/hip hop scene in Seattle. He can and does perform with bands as a drummer, DJ, keyboardist and MC, and can also rock a guitar! He is the producer on this track and his style is very recognizable as coming from his hometown of LA where funk and rap met back in the 70's and produced influences like DJ QUICK, DRE, ICE CUBE, ROGER & ZAPP, and his father's famous funk band LAKESIDE. (in which he now plays percussion) check out their song "STILL FUNKDAFIED"
I hope you enjoyed this episode of SEA MONSTER RADIO... catch you next month with more great original Seattle/NW soul, funk, jazz, blues, electronic, hip hop, singer/songwriter music!
